The Queer Code

A code for LGBTQ+, MOGAI, and queer individuals

CW: Reclaimed slurs that are not censored for accessibility & out of respect for those who reclaim them

Update 11/28: Added violae veldian, simplified code, and pronouns

What is the queer code?

The queer code, or QuC, is a shorthand code designed to let LGBTQ+, MOGAI and/or queer individuals quickly and subtly communicate their identities over text.

It was inspired by the Multiple Code, the Plural Code, and made with help from members of the MOGAI Multiverse discord.

Currently, the code has no plaintext version, but it may in the future!

How to Use the Code

The code can be written in more or less any order, as long as you do categories from top to bottom.
The only exceptions are:

Orienation
Emoji for the type of attraction goes first, then modifier second. For example, if youโ€™re demisexual bisexual, the code would be:
๐Ÿฆขโ™ฆ๏ธ๐ŸŒ™

Relationships
Use one red heart per partner, with the hearts for the relationship after either in brackets or directly after. For example, if you have a queerplatonic sexual partner and a romantic partner who you are in a t4t relationship with, the code would be:
โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’™ โค๏ธ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’•
or
โค๏ธ[๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’™] โค๏ธ[๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’•]

What if my label has no emojis?
You have a few options here.
1. Simply write out the term in brackets in the relevant section. You can also treat the code as a word to create one, ie [demi๐Ÿฎ] to make demiboy
2. Create your own emoji for the term. Note that if the code is updated your emoji may change meaning!
3. Get creative and mash up other emojis--if you do this to refer to one identity, itโ€™s ideal to have them in brackets to minimize confusion!

Example Code
Letโ€™s say someone is a 14 year old lesbian, demisexual, biromantic (mspec), transgender, gai, aplatonic, and genderfaun. They have two partners, one queerplatonic and one romantic & alterous.
Their code, for example, could be formatted in the following ways:

FAQ

Will you add pronoun codes?
Solid maybe! The main problem is just the sheer amount of pronouns out there--it's hard to know what to include!

Why doesn't x have an emoji?
I might not know of it, or it might already be a microlabel of something included already. Unfortunately there's only so many emojis this code can use! If you know me, you can still ask!

Will you add emojis for x non-queer group?
If it's not under MOGAI (Marginalized Orientations, Gender Alignments, and Intersex) it most likely will not be added due to the intent of the code.

What's your code?
I'm glad you asked!

What's some boring stuff?
This Carrd was last updated November 28 2021 and I'm currently working on linking sources for all terms mentioned to learn about them.
